Hydrogen as a sustainable energy carrier for the future. At the moment, little attention is paid to it and the possibilities in the Netherlands for producing and using hydrogen are also limited. Time to change this! Because hydrogen is seen as a solution to many challenges in the energy transition. Green hydrogen can become very large, but because it is still fairly in its infancy, it is necessary to gain and share as much knowledge and experience as possible. The H2Hub Twente initiative was created to gain insight into what hydrogen can mean for the Twente region. This platform, which was officially launched at the end of October, is intended to warm Twente to green hydrogen. As an active partner, Machinefabriek Boessenkool, together with the other partners, of H2Hub Twente is preparing for a sustainable future.
Boessenkool as a sustainable partner
Machinefabriek Boessenkool is one of the initiators of H2Hub Twente. Owner of Boessenkool and also board member of H2Hub Twente Eelco Osse, together with co-initiators and board members Gerard Schröder and Jogé Nijhof, sees a future in hydrogen as an energy source. However, a lot still needs to be done in the field of hydrogen. Especially with regard to its application. Because hydrogen appears to be an interesting source of energy for a number of its own products, Eelco is very involved in the possibilities that hydrogen has to offer. Hydrogen is the future and there is therefore a lot of attention being paid to the options where hydrogen can be used as an energy source, where other sources are no longer the solution, for example.
Looking at the direct demand from the business community, but also at the opportunities that hydrogen offers, some interesting projects are currently being worked on: a forklift, electric tractor, truck and drone powered by hydrogen. In addition, the technology for a hydrogen burner is being examined.
What is hydrogen and what can you do with it?
Hydrogen is an energy carrier and important in the sustainable energy transition. Hydrogen is colorless, odorless, non-toxic and contains no carbon. For example, you can use hydrogen as a heat source for homes and industry, as a fuel for cars, as a raw material for industry and as energy storage. To make hydrogen sustainable, so-called green hydrogen is produced using electricity instead of natural gas.
The center of the Twente hydrogen revolution
H2Hub Twente is a partnership between entrepreneurs, educational institutions and the government. The aim is to find out what the possibilities are of hydrogen and how you can apply and further develop hydrogen technology. Knowledge and experience are built up together through research and projects. Entrepreneurs in Twente, from small to large, ensure that they are aware of each other’s developments and that they work together where possible and make cross connections. Partly because of this network, there are so many more possibilities for gathering substantive expertise and financing options. With concrete projects, meetings and knowledge exchange, entrepreneurs and knowledge institutions contribute to the energy transition and a strong Twente economy.
At H2Hub we work in three concrete steps: Generation, storage and application. Besides the fact that the intention is to actually generate hydrogen, it is also interesting to look at how transport, storage and ultimately its application should be handled.
